Storyboard Plan 1.0
Today, I pitched my advertisement idea for the storyboard project for the first time to my media teacher, Mr. Nick. I explained how I planned to make a Nintendo Switch advertisement targeted for adults about a stressed out business man relieving his stress by playing the Nintendo Switch with his colleagues. Mr. Nick said that it was lacking something and suggested to add more to the idea and give more interesting aspects to it so it would be more appealing to the audiences.
I gave it a lot of thought and came up with more ideas throughout the lesson. I also decided to change the product of my advertisement to the game Pokemon Legends: Arceus to focus more on advertising a specific game instead of advertising many different games on the console.
Here is a rough plan of my advertisement:
Product: Pokemon Legends: Arceus (video game)
Target Market: People in their mid 30s
Setting: CEO's office/workplace, House
Outfit: Formal Clothing/Suit/Work clothes
Storyline:
(Pokemon names are written in Italics)
- main character: mid 30s man is a CEO of a company
- shot of name plaque on desk (CEO), man working on the background out of focus
- in his office signing papers getting work calls non-stop (diegetic sound: phone ringing, flipping papers)
- man loosens his tie, looks very stressed
- man’s bag starts rustling
- man opens bag, Nintendo switch starts glowing
- man picks up the switch and switch jumps off from his hand to the table
- Nintendo switch starts shaking on table and Pikachu jumps out from the switch
- man surprised, confused, moves/pushes chair back
- Pikachu looks at him, “pika-pika”, takes his phone and runs out the office
- man stands up from chair, dialogue: “Hey! My phone!”
- man grabs his suit and chases after Pikachu, bumps an employee carrying papers in the hallway, paper falls everywhere, keeps on running while looking back and dialogue: “Sorry!”
- man outside building looks left and right, Pikachu gone
- Wyrdeer sound, man looks to his right, sees Wyrdeer with his bag in its mouth, Wyrdeer sound
- man rides Wyrdeer following Pikachu to his house, opens door and sees a Hisuian Growlithe sitting wagging its tail, Hisuian Growlithe barks
- shot of a Shinx on the counter pressing man’s phone with its snout (calling man’s friends)
- Hisuian Growlithe jumps on couch sits and barks at man. man dialogue: *chuckles* "alright chill-out buddy"
- man sits and pets Hisuian Growlithe
- sound effect: doorbell
- shot of Mr. Mime opening the door, revealing man’s 2 friends, a man with a Rowlet on his shoulder and a woman with a Cyndaquil in her arms, dialogue “Hi (name of main character)”, Rowlet and Cyndaquil sound effect
- friends sit on couch and watch man pick his starter Pokemon, man picks Oshawott, Oshawott jumps from the tv (sound effect pokeball sound) to the table in front of the couch
- Oshawott POV of man carrying Oshawott, dialogue: "I choose you!",
- Man's POV: Oshawott smiles, Oshawott sound effect.
- shot of tv of Pokemon Legends Arceus on the tv, man battles and catches Pokemon.
- man and friends celebrate, the Pokemons irl disappear (only the friends and the man are in the shot)
- A shot of Pikachu waving and dialogue: “pika-pika” on the counter with a Pokemon Legends Arceus physical copy, text: “Available now”, narrative: "Available now in physical stores and the Nintendo eshop" (man and friends playing on couch out of focus on the background)
Reasons why I chose each Pokemon on the advertisement:
- Pikachu - The main mascot of Pokemon. Everyone knows and can recognize Pikachu very easily so putting Pikachu in the advertisement can make audiences immediately recognize that it is a Pokemon advertisement upon seeing it.
- Wyrdeer - In the game, the player can get around the map faster by riding a Wyrdeer. This a new mechanic that isn't in previous games so putting it in the advertisement will showcase this new mechanic to audiences.
- Shinx - Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a prequel of the game Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Shinx is a Pokemon which was first released/is from the game Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Putting it in the advertisement will give a slight hint to the audience that Pokemon Legends: Arceus will somehow be related to the game Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Also tells the audience that it will appear in the game.
- Hisuian Growlithe - It is a new form of an existing pokemon, Growlithe. It will appear for the first time in Pokemon Legends Arceus. Audiences who played the classic Pokemon games will know who Growlithe is so putting Hisuian Growlithe in the advertisement will excite Pokemon fans/audiences who played the classic games and knows who Growlithe is.
The "Classic" Growlithe

- Mr. Mime - In my advertisement, Mr Mime will be seen opening the door for the guests, the man's friends. This is an intertextuality which references the Pokemon anime. In the anime, a Mr. Mime lives with Ash Ketchum and his mom. He can often be seen helping with household chores in the house, such as cooking, cleaning the house and greeting guests. Putting Mr. Mime in the advertisement can act as an easter egg for audiences who have watched the Pokemon anime and it also tells audiences that Mr. Mime will make an appearance in the game.
- Cyndaquil, Rowlet & Oshawott - These 3 Pokemon are the 3 starter Pokemons of this game. They will be the Player's first ever pokemon and a partner Pokemon most people will use throughout their entire gameplay. In my advertisement, the main character's 2 friends can be seen with a Rowlet and a Cyndaquil respectively which suggests that they also have recently started playing the game and picked them as their starter Pokemon. The main character also then started the game and chose Oshawott as his starter Pokemon.
Great detail, thanks. I think it's a better idea that you have focused on a particular game rather than the console itself. And a better idea to have aspects of the game come out of the console as opposed to the character entering the game. Here are some tweaks:
ReplyDelete- When the console is in the bag maybe the CEO could hear "pika pika" and then investigate where the noise is coming from, instead of the console just glowing.
- I think there might be too much happening at the man's house (and it will be difficult to storyboard all of it). Try and simplify it a little.
- What if when the man leaves his office, he is suddenly confronted with a world of pokemon. He chases the pikachu through the streets, past people playing with/battling pokemon.
- Pikachu then leads him to his house. Inside the TV is on saying "choose your pokemon". The man looks around the room and the three starter pokemon are waiting for him.
- Your slogan doesn't need to be "available in stores ", you can think of something more creative than that. (Start your pokemon adventure/bringing the world of pokemon to you blah blah blah)
